FITZGERALD ELECTRICAL FLOURISHES FOR THIRTY YEARS
Although the retail face of Limerick City has changed dramatically in the past few years a few stalwarts not only remain but continue to flourish and one such company is Jack Fitzgerald Electrical.
When Jack decided to set up his electrical business on lower Shannon St. nearly three decades ago, he could not have envisaged the success the company has enjoyed since.
He spent most of his working life in the electrical trade in Limerick and declared: “we started off very small concentrating mainly on heating with electric radiators and imitation electric fires, but from small beginnings we have now grown to cater for almost every electrical need for the domestic, commercial and industrial consumer”.
As the company continued to grow, in 1988 Jack acquired the premises on 99 Henry St. (formerly Brosnan Electrical) right around the corner from his lower Shannon St. premises. “We decided that as the business was growing we needed to expand. The Henry St. store was run by my wife Rose and it concentrated on the domestic side of the business leaving Lower Shannon St. to cater for the commercial side and our electrical contractors”.
In 1989 Jack recognised an opportunity in County Limerick when he acquired the former ESB premises in Kilmallock. “There wasn’t an electrical store catering for that part of the county se we decided to try to meet the needs of the people in the area”.
Jack’s son Roy took up the running of this store and almost twenty years later he continues to provide the people of Kilmallock and its surrounding areas with all their electrical needs recently adding a key cutting service as another string to his bow.
As the years moved on and Jack’s business in Limerick continued to grow, Jack’s other son John joined the business and not long after this an opportunity arose to acquire the corner premises (formerly Ladbrokes Bookmakers) that separated Jack’s Henry St and Shannon St premises. “This was a great opportunity for us to expand our growing business and gave us the opportunity to showcase a greater range of our products”.
Having acquired these three premises wrapping around the corner of Henry St and lower Shannon St., it was always Jack’s plan to amalgamate all three into one large unit where his customers could shop in comfort. And with a new millennium approaching and the ongoing redevelopment of the Howley’s Quay area of the city, Jack decided to do just this in 1999, temporarily moving a short distance while the new outlet was being constructed.
Having seen the spacious and comfortable new premises in Limerick, in 2005 Roy decided it was time to take on a similar project in his Kilmallock store constructing a large new premises on the existing site temporarily moving to another premises in Kilmallock (formerly Tim Cahills Warehouse?) during construction. “After a couple of years where we seemed to be constantly moving. We are delighted that we are now settled in both premises and can offer our customers spacious new showrooms to shop in comfort” said Jack.
After nearly thirty years serving the people of Limerick city and county Jack’s business continues to thrive and although the face of Limerick city trading has changed over the last three decades with the arrival of pedestrianised streets and so on, Jack is quick to point out that he is flanked by two multi-storey car parks on either side of his premises so car parking is ‘no problem’.
He has witnessed untold change in his business since those small beginnings in lower Shannon St., but the principles of a small family business still apply today and John agrees saying that he believes the essence of a family business is the quality of customer service it provides and that is especially true for this particular family run business as they are one of the only store’s of its kind in the country that offer its customers the amazing service that if you purchase an appliance from them they will deliver and install your new appliance as well as disconnecting and removing your old appliance all for FREE!
It is this quality of customer service and the vast product knowledge of their experienced staff that has seen Jack Fitzgerald Electrical continue to grow and all the Fitzgerald family would like to thank their loyal customers who have supported them over the last thirty years and hope to continue to serve them for many years to come.
